چکیده

OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between subfoveal choroidal thickness in healthy southern Thailand volunteers and age, axial length, and refractive error. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This was a prospective cross-sectional case series. A total of 210 eyes of 105 healthy volunteers (86 women, age 23-83 years) in southern Thailand were examined with enhanced depth-imaging optical coherence tomography. Subjects with systemic diseases that may affect the choroidal vascular blood vessels, such as diabetes, impaired renal function, and hypertension, were excluded. Refractive error and axial length were measured by autorefractometry and an IOLMaster, respectively. Subfoveal choroidal thickness was measured from the outer border of the retinal pigment epithelium to the inner scleral border in the subfoveal area. RESULTS The mean subfoveal choroidal thickness was 279.4±75.49 μm, and the mean age was 46.4±16.45 years. Subfoveal choroidal thickness was negatively correlated with age (r (2)=0.33, P<0.0001) and axial length (r (2)=0.02, P<0.02). Multivariable regression analysis showed subfoveal choroidal thickness was positively and negatively correlated with a spherical equivalent refractive error and axial length, respectively, when adjusted for age. CONCLUSION Age is the most important factor in choroidal thickness rather than axial length and refractive error. Subfoval choroidal thickness was decreased 2.67 μm every year and 14.59 μm with 1 mm increase in axial length.

Evaluation of Normal Choroidal Thickness in Rasht Using SD-OCT EDI Imaging

Purpose: To measure choroidal thickness in normal subjects, using optical coherent tomography (OCT) in Rasht. Methods: Normal subjects older than 20 years, living in Rasht, were selected through systematic random sampling by using the city telephone directory. The subjects underwent comprehensive eye examinations for inclusion in the study. Then, choroidal thickness was measured in both eyes by...

Comparison of Choroidal Thickness in Psoriasis and Control Groups Using Optical Coherence Tomography

Background and Objective: One of the most common extracutaneous complications in psoriasis patients is ocular complications, which is controversial concerning its effect on choroidal thickness. This study aimed to compare the psoriasis patients with healthy individuals in terms of the thickness of the choroidal layer using the optical coherence tomography technique. Materials and Methods: In t...

Baseline subfoveal choroidal thickness as an indicator for bevacizumab outcomes in central retinal vein occlusion

Background: Retinal vein occlusions are one of the most common form of retinal vascular disorders and could lead to vision loss due to macular edema, macular ischemia and sequelae from neovascularization. Anti-venous endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) treatment is the choice strategy of treatment for patients with macular edema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). There is an ...

Lack of association between glaucoma and macular choroidal thickness measured with enhanced depth-imaging optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE To compare choroidal thickness measurements among normal eyes, eyes with normal tension glaucoma (NTG), and those with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and to correlate choroidal thickness with demographic and clinical ocular parameters. METHODS Choroidal thickness was measured with enhanced depth-imaging (EDI) optical coherence tomography (OCT) in one eye of 38 normal, 20 NTG, and...

Glaucoma and Choroidal Thickness

Since the landmark study by Spaide and colleagues on the development of enhanced depth imaging by optical coherence tomography, an increasing number of studies have addressed choroidal thickness in normal eyes, factors associated with choroidal thickness in normal eyes, and associations of choroidal thickness with various retinal and retinochoroidal disorders. These studies have revealed that m...
